About the Program

The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) through the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities’ (CRCHD) Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE) programs. This internship program runs from early June through August and provides undergraduate and medical school students with 8-weeks of intensive clinical or behavioral research studies focusing on biobanking, precision medicine and can cancer health disparities, under the mentorship of an assigned expert research scientist at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida or Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.


The SPIRIT-CHD is open to U.S. citizens currently enrolled as an undergraduate or medical school student interested in biomedical research. Minority undergraduate and medical school students are strongly encouraged to apply.


Admission to the SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program is highly competitive. Participant selection is based on the following:

  • Academic standing; GPA (for undergraduate students)
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Essay Question(s)
  • Updated resume or CV
  • Interest in cancer health disparities, biobanking and precision medicine research

Students that are selected for the program are subject to their admitting institution’s onboarding policies. This may include drug screening, background check and a tuberculosis test (TB). Students may also be asked to provide their immunization records. Further information about these onboarding requirements and procedures will be provided to students upon admittance into the program. 

For their participation in the program participants receive a stipend to cover personal expenses. Stipends are distributed in two installments - the first mid-way through the internship and the second after all program requirements are completed. The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program does not fund housing for out-of-town students. Candidates are required to make their own living arrangements for the duration of the program.
