• What are the dates for the SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program?
    • The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship program begins the first week of June and runs 8 consecutive weeks through the end of July. Please note that end times may differ slightly based on school schedules and the institution in which you are completing your internship.

 

  • When are applications due?
    • Applications and any supplemental materials (e.g. recommendation letters) are due Sunday, January 31st, 2021 by 11:59pm EST, for undergraduate students applying to the program.
      For medical students applying to the program at Moffitt Cancer Center, applications are being accepted on a rolling basis.
  • Do I have to be classified as an underrepresented minority to apply to the SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program?
    • No. However, priority is given to students from groups that are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral science research.  

 

  • How do I know if I am classified as underrepresented in biomedical and/or behavioral science research?
    • The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program uses the definition provided by the National Institute of Health to define underrepresented. To read the definition in its entirety click here.

 

  • Can I take a summer class while completing the internship?
    • During the course of the 8-week summer internship program students are expected to work full time (40 hours per week) and should not have other extensive time commitments such as summer classes (online or in-person) that may interfere with their work schedule.

 

  • Is the internship paid?
    • Undergraduates will receive $3,000 and medical students will receive $3,500, which will be paid out in two installments. The first installment will take place mid-way through the program and the second installment will be given upon completion of all program requirements (e.g. submission of internship deliverables, completion of all evaluations, etc.). Please note that stipend payments may differ slightly based on which institution you are completing your summer internship.

 

  • Can I apply for the internship at both sites?
    • However it is important to note that the SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program at LSUHSC and Moffitt do not provide housing or housing stipends to students. Students are responsible for their own accommodations while participating in this program.

 

  • I am a high school senior. Am I eligible to apply for the internship?
    • At this time, the SPIRIT-CHD summer internship program is only open to currently enrolled undergraduate and medical school students.

 

  • I just graduated this past summer or spring. Am I eligible to apply?
    • In order to be eligible students must be enrolled at the time of application submission. Students are not eligible if they graduate before the start of the internship.

 

  • What is the time commitment for the summer internship?
    • The SPIRIT-CHD summer internship is a full-time program (40 hours per week). While individual student schedules may vary based on lab placement, students typically work Monday - Friday for 8 hours per day.
