About the Internship

The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program provides students in Tampa, Florida and New Orleans, Louisiana with 8-weeks of intensive clinical and/or behavioral research studies under the mentorship of an assigned expert research scientist from Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida and Research Institute and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program is funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) through the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities’ (CRCHD) Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE) programs. For their participation in the program, participants receive a stipend to cover personal expenses.

Students that are admitted to the program are subject to their admitting institution’s onboarding policies. This may include drug screening, background check and a tuberculosis test (TB). Further information about these onboarding requirements and procedures will be provided to students upon admittance to the program. Students may also be asked to provide their immunization records.

Eligibility

The SPIRIT-CHD is open to U.S. citizens currently enrolled as an undergraduate or medical school student interested in biomedical research. The SPIRIT-CHD has an added focus on cancer health disparities, biobanking and precision medicine research. Priority is given to students from groups that are underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral science research. The SPIRIT-CHD program uses the National Institute of Health's (NIH) definition of underrepresented. Students from underrepresented groups may include (but is not limited to) racial and ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minorities, first-generation Americans, persons living with disabilities, etc. To read NIH's definition in its entirety click here 

The SPIRIT-CHD Summer Internship Program does not fund housing for out-of-town students. Candidates are required to make their own living arrangements for the duration of the program.
