The Southeast Partnership for Improving Research and Training in Cancer Health Disparities (SPIRIT-CHD) unites Moffitt Cancer Center (MCC) and Research Institute and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) to develop a Cancer Research Education Program (CREP) for underrepresented undergraduate and medical students with a keen focus on biobanking, precision medicine, and cancer health disparities. The CREP is composed of an immersive 8-week summer internship program that provides trainees with research experiences under the supervision of faculty mentors at each institution, participation in a joint web-based didactic curriculum, and tailored community outreach and engagement experiences in underserved communities.

Mentors (and co-mentors) play an integral role in trainee development. As a SPIRIT-CHD CREP mentor, trainees would be placed in your lab to work on a research project over the course of the 8-week program. Due to COVID-19, SPIRIT interns will have the availability to work a hybrid schedule to include in-person and remote work. In order to successfully complete the summer internship program, students will be required to submit an abstract based on their research. In addition, students will present their research during Moffitt's annual (student) Research Day.  Details about abstract and presentation formatting will be provided to the mentor and the student during orientation.

As a SPIRIT mentor you will:

- Supervise student work activities day-to-day during their placement in the lab

- Provide feedback, guidance and suggestions regarding professional development

- Allow students to attend all mandatory SPIRIT-CHD related activities (weekly didactic seminars, community outreach events, team meetings)

Program Managers for the SPIRIT-CHD partnership will handle all administrative and on-boarding tasks for students before placement in your lab. Please address any additional questions to Z’Kera Sims or Vivekka Suppiah at
